HUMAN DIMENSION GAP CONFERENCE

One of the immediate benefits of Kolbe Corp joining the EDGE® Innovation Network (See March 2010 Kolbe Currents) was a formal invitation to participate in the US Army’s Human Dimension Gap Conference at Ft Monroe, VA. Approximately 100 participants from academia, government and industry gathered to discuss the concept of holistic fitness for the soldier and leaders of the future. This includes all components of the human dimension triad: the physical, social and cognitive.

Kolbe Corp was represented in the discussions and made literature available that described a famously missing dimension in holistic fitness: the conative. Sad to say in a group of psychiatrists, psychologists and behavioral scientists, the concept of conation was virtually unknown. The “social” dimension does include affective components but a Norwegian Colonel complained that little attention was given to this dimension with almost the total focus of the conference being the cognitive dimension. Indeed, 4 of the 6 listed topics on the agenda had “cognitive’ or “cognition” in the title.

Following a presentation from a panel of six experts, an entry point for introducing the conative dimension was the conference coordinator’s lament that if it were only possible to identify people with the “predisposition” for certain tasks, the Army could certainly get better results from its training. This is an opportunity we’re committed to seize. In future conferences we expect to be at the podium building the case for identifying how each soldier naturally solves problems and more productively matching them to the tasks at hand. Move over cognitive and make place for the conative.
